Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about CloxFe Tablets

Why does CloxFe use iron bisglycinate instead of ferrous sulphate?

Ferrous sulphate is the cheapest form of iron and it is the one most often blamed for stomach upset, constipation and nausea. Iron bisglycinate is iron bound to two glycine molecules, which changes how it is absorbed and makes it gentler on the digestive system for most people. It is a more expensive raw material, but it is the reason many people can keep taking CloxFe when other iron supplements have not agreed with them.

How much iron is in each tablet?

Each tablet contains 20mg of iron as bisglycinate, which is 142.8% of the Nutrient Reference Value. Iron contributes to the normal formation of haemoglobin and red blood cells, and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

When is the best time to take it?

One tablet daily with a meal. If you can, take it alongside something containing vitamin C — a glass of orange juice, some peppers, a kiwi — as vitamin C improves iron absorption. Try to avoid taking it at the same time as tea, coffee or a calcium supplement, all of which work against absorption.

Why is there copper in an iron supplement?

Copper contributes to the normal transport of iron in the body, so the two work together rather than competing. Each tablet contains 1mg, which is 100% of the NRV.

What does the L-methylfolate do?

L-methylfolate is the active, already-converted form of folate. Some people carry gene variants that make it harder to convert ordinary folic acid into the form the body uses, and the methylated form skips that step. Folate contributes to normal blood formation, which is why it sits alongside iron here.

How long should I take CloxFe for?

It's designed for continuous daily use rather than short courses, and there's no need to cycle it. Iron status changes gradually, so give it several weeks of consistent use. If you're taking it because a blood test showed low iron, your GP will usually want to recheck your levels after a few months.

Can I take CloxFe with my other supplements or medication?

Iron can interfere with the absorption of several prescription medicines, including levothyroxine and some antibiotics, so leave a gap of at least two hours between them. If you take any regular medication, are pregnant, or have been told you have high iron levels or haemochromatosis, check with your GP or pharmacist before starting.
