Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about QutaGen Tablets
What is Quatrefolic and why use it?
Quatrefolic is a branded form of folate — the glucosamine salt of (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid. It's the fourth-generation, already-active form, meaning the body doesn't have to convert it the way it does ordinary folic acid. That matters for people whose conversion is less efficient.
How much folate does it contain?
250µg per tablet, which is 125% of the Nutrient Reference Value. Folate contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
Is 250µg enough if I'm trying to conceive?
UK guidance recommends 400µg daily for women trying to conceive and through the first twelve weeks of pregnancy. QutaGen provides 250µg, so if pregnancy is your reason for taking it, check with your midwife or GP about whether you need additional folate or a dedicated prenatal product.
Can I take it long term?
Each tablet contains 40mg of vitamin B6. UK guidance advises against prolonged supplementation above 10mg of B6 per day, so QutaGen is not intended for indefinite continuous use. Please speak to your GP or pharmacist about how long is appropriate for you, and don't combine it with other B6-containing supplements.
Is it suitable for vegetarians or vegans?
The tablet contains no gelatin and uses a hydroxypropyl methylcellulose glazing agent, so it's suitable for vegetarians. Note that Quatrefolic is a glucosamine salt — the glucosamine here is synthetic rather than shellfish-derived, but contact us if you have a shellfish allergy and we'll confirm the specification.
Can I take it with medication?
Folate can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency, and B6 at higher doses can interact with certain medicines including levodopa and some anti-epileptics. If you take regular medication, check with your GP or pharmacist first.
How should I take it?
One tablet daily with a meal.
